Cars Will Get Self Cleaning Touchscreens Soon
These days, touchscreens occupy a sizable area of the dashboard of a car and are frequently covered in greasy fingerprints. For a clean exterior, General Motors has developed a touchscreen device that automatically removes fingerprints. In addition to red, green, and blue pixels, the enhanced panels will also have a violet pixel that resembles ultraviolet light. Moreover, a photocatalyst screen layer that is invisible will absorb specific light to cause a chemical reaction on the touchscreen.
The initial suggestion in GM’s patent is to use a metal-oxide-based photocatalyst to respond to ultraviolet rays from sunshine. To keep interiors dark and cool, many cars utilise window tinting, thus the violet pixels would start the reaction.
The photocatalyst in the screen coating would begin to react chemically with moisture in the air at night when the violet pixels would switch on and activate it, breaking down grease, oil residue, and fingerprints. The greasy streaks and fingerprints will vanish like dust in the wind once the reaction ends and everything dries.
