Christmas Celebrations in Pakistan 2022
The 25th of December is a national holiday in Pakistan, although it honors Jinnah, who founded the country. Christians make up a very small percentage of the population, just like in India. However, there are more over 5 million Christians in Pakistan, a country with over 162 million inhabitants!
The majority of Christians in Pakistan are locals and are very underprivileged.
A large procession travels from St. Anthony’s Church to the Cathedral in Lahore during Christian holidays like Christmas and Easter. To get to the Cathedral for the services takes hours. These are then enthusiastically celebrated! Spiritual seminars are held before and during Advent to aid individuals in getting ready for Christmas.
In many Christian communities, carol singing is performed by various organizations during the final week of Advent. When they sing carols at homes, the residents give the choir a gift in exchange. The majority of the time, the proceeds from these carols are donated to the church or used for charitable purposes.
Each home is ornamented and has a star on the roof in the major Christian neighborhoods. Additionally, the streets are lit and ornamented. Other significant decorations include the Christmas tree and crib. Additionally, Christians occasionally exchange Christmas cakes.
Christians attend church once more on Christmas Day for the Bara Din festivities. People dress up in vibrant attire. They can spend hours in the church courtyard tasting meals from the numerous stalls. Typically, the evening is spent eating special meals with close relatives or direct family. Visiting parents is common for grownups.
Children on the occasion of Christmas also get very excited for the Santa Clause who is dressed up in white and red clothes. The SantA Clause distributes presents and sweets among the Christian children.
