Former President Pervez Musharraf dies in Dubai
Pervez Musharraf, a former president, was receiving medical treatment at an American facility in Dubai.
Pervez Musharraf was Pakistan’s a former president. He died at the age of 79 in Dubai following a prolonged illness, according to a report on Sunday by Geo News.
According to his family, the former dictator passed away at American Hospital Dubai. He was receiving medical treatment for his condition.
Musharraf was born in Delhi, British India, on August11, 1943. On April19,1961, he received his commission from the Pakistan Military Academy Kakul. He joined the special services group as soon as he received his commission.
The military ruler also participated in the wars of 1965 and 1971. In 1998, he received a general’s promotion, and he became the new chief of army staff (COAS).
On October 12, 1999, General (Ret.) Musharraf staged a coup d’état to seize control. Then, after gaining office, Musharraf continued to lead Pakistan for the longest period of time. From 2002-2008, He served as Pakistan’s President.
During his time in office, the military chief agreed to the US demand for Pakistan to join the US as a front-line partner following the 9/11 tragedy.
Moreover, the Lawyers’ Movement, movement for restoration of Judiciary, got its start when Musharraf took anti-constitutional steps to remove the Supreme Court judges in November 2007.
Musharraf resigned from his position as president on August18,2008, as a result of a movement spearheaded by Pakistan’s major parties.
On December17,2019, a special court imposed a death sentence on the former military leader. It was in accordance with Article 6 of the Constitution. He was charged with high treason while the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was in power.
Musharraf appeared in court on March 31 2016, after being indicted on the accusations. However, later, due to his sickness, he flew out of the country.
