Turkey and Syria Earthquake: more than 1400 dead
A massive earthquake that struck central Turkey and northwest Syria on Monday claimed the lives of over 1,400 people. It injured thousands more while destroying apartment buildings and further devastation Syrian communities already battered by years of war.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake was the worst to hit Turkiye this century and struck in the early hours of a winter morning..
Early in the afternoon, another significant earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 followed it.
According to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, 2,818 buildings fell, leaving 912 people dead and 5,383 injured. Erdogan stated that he was unable to foresee how much the death toll would increase as search and rescue operations went on.
He said ““Everyone is putting their heart and soul into efforts although winter season, cold weather and the earthquake happening during the night makes things more difficult.”
More than 326 people have died and 1,042 have been injured in Syria. Syria has already been devastated by more than 11 years of civil conflict. Rescuers reported 221 deaths in the northwest of Syria.
Twitter users shared video of two nearby buildings in Aleppo, Syria, falling one after the other and sending clouds of dust pouring into the air. Buildings fell in the hours following the earthquake, according to two inhabitants of the heavily damaged city.
Erdogan claimed that 45 nations have offered to assist in the search and rescue operations.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also extended condolence to Syrian and Turkish governments.
